4 Tips to Inspire Your Child to Fall In Love With Their Natural Hair

Building a positive relationship with your child’s hair starts the same way as your relationship with your hair. Learning the child’s essential elements and crafting a good dose of patience with the routine that will be suited to your particular child. This blog post will offer four tips on how you can inspire your child to fall in love with their own natural hair.

Tip #1: Representation Matters

It’s super important for children to see themselves in the different media they consume, whether that be their favorite shows, books, characters, etc.

Brands such as Healthy Root Dolls created beautiful dolls of all black and brown shades to help teach the importance of natural hair care at an early age.

Healthy Root Dolls actually gifted us a few dolls for our recent children’s project, and it really made us smile to see the kids working on the dolls hair in the salon. Toys such as dolls can also get your child more comfortable with the idea of “wash day” and getting their hair done.

Tip #2: Your Words Hold Power

We know that we’re all human and it’s normal to not feel up to embarking on wash day with your child. However, we want to give you a gentle reminder that your words hold power.

Redefining wash day and speaking of it as a positive experience for both you and your child and not a daunting task, can also help shape how your child feels about their hair.

As our 6-year-old model Madison said in the salon, her hair is a “10 out of 10.” We know that’s right! Don’t be afraid to tell your child their hair is “beautiful” although the world at times may not believe so.

Tip #3: Find Good Books or Magazines

Nowadays, it’s fairly easy to find a good set of books or magazines of other children or characters with natural hair. It’s important for your child to see these images on a regular basis, but again representation matters, and it’s important that they see themselves in the world.

Combining this with your own confidence levels can help instill healthy habits and self-confidence in your child in relation to their own hair.

Tip #4: Lead By Example

Remember, children are sponges and absorb everything being said and done in their immediate environments.

When your child sees you taking care of your hair and giving it the proper love and attention it needs, they will see that and can adopt similar mannerisms.

Fun fact: During our children’s project that spanned over the course of 3 months, there was not one child that came into the salon that didn’t love their natural hair. It was beautiful and affirming to see, and it truly starts at home. You can be the exact example that your child yearns to see.
