5 Things We’re Not Doing To Our Natural Hair In 2024

Happy 2024! A new year is an exciting time because it reveals a special type of refreshness to all of our lives. If you’re familiar with our corner of the Internet, then you know we’re all about ease, using our time wisely and most of all, showing up and out in these streets with bomb hair.

With newness comes leaving habits that do not serve us in the past, and this is also relevant when it comes to hair. We’re on to bigger and better in 2024, and this blog post will outline 5 things that we’re no longer doing to our natural hair in the new year.

#1: We’re Not Getting Hair Cuts that Don’t Match Our Lifestyle

We’re not shying away from the elephant in the room, as we know that many social conversations had in 2023 centered around curly cuts not addressing split ends or helping aid to length retention.

If you’ve been familiar with Black Girl Curls for a while now, then you know that we’ve always stated that you should get a cut that best matches how you like to wear it.

The right haircut for you is the one that you want to show up in the world with. Your face shape doesn’t matter. Your body size/shape doesn’t matter. Your age doesn’t matter. What does matter is how you want to been seen by the world around you and what your current hair budget is.

If you wear your hair in straight styles 85% of the time, get your hair cut straight. If you wear your hair curly 85% of the time, get your hair cut curly. If you wear your hair set in twists, braids, bantu knots, and/or other stretched but not straightened styles 85% of the time get a blown out cut from someone that understands 3-Dimensional shaping.

If you like to switch your style up regularly between curly and straight you may want to have your haircut blown out but not flat ironed. This allows for a 3-Dimensional shape, but the cut isn’t tailored to the spring of individual curls. If you wear your hair curly every blue moon just because it was a casual week, getting a straight haircut may be the most beneficial for you.

#2: We Won’t Be Afraid of Applying Heat

Within the natural hair community, we acknowledge that there’s generally a level of apprehension when discussing heat. We are constantly working to put that fear at ease, as we spent the entire last quarter of 2023 discussing how to properly use heat tools.

Also, in our digital course community—The SeeSomeCurls Visual Library, we have brand new styling video tutorials for blow outs, flexi rod sets and wand curls demonstrated by licensed stylist, Carlisa Rush.

You can check out this blog post for more professional tips on how to use properly use direct heat without compromising your natural hair.

#3: We’re Not, NOT Having Fun With Our Hair

Freedom. That’s why we went natural, right? Freedom from chemicals. Freedom from the fear of rain. Freedom from entire Saturdays dishing the dirt in the salon while giving our overbooked stylist a mean side-eye.

But let's be honest, most of us had hella fun with our relaxed hair. Long layers one season, sickening Chinese bob with laser cut bangs another season, with an edgy Ri- Ri mohawk in between.

A fly cut + amazing color + healthy natural hair = THE BUSINESS.

In 2024, we’re ignoring the mamas, aunties, and cousins who say “natural hair isn’t for everyone.” We’re ignoring those who say “that color isn’t for everyone.” We’re ignoring everyone who thinks curls aren’t “professional” or “workplace appropriate.” We’re ignoring everyone who thinks natural hair isn’t “special occasion” hair.

In the famous words of our auntie Maxine Waters, we’re "reclaiming our time!” We’re partnering with skilled stylists and living our best lives.

#4: We’re Leading Others Directly To The Source

We know that it can be very easy to crowdsource from people who only do their own hair or gain tips and take small pieces and put it somewhere it doesn’t fit from a professional or group of professionals. Hair care is comprehensive and it’s not effective (or cheap) to trial and error our way into bomb hair.

When you take one piece of information from a professional and tie another piece to a blogger who has amazing hair genetically, you’re not getting the full picture. You’re not getting A to Z, you’re getting A to B.

We’ve officially rolled our our new SeeSomeCurls Rewards Program where current subscribers can earn big rewards for referring friends, family and even strangers!

#5: We’re Not Obsessing Over the Little Things

Oftentimes, we see naturals come into our educational space completely overwhelmed and not knowing where to start. We’re here to gently remind you that’s totally okay being a beginner.

To shift your mindset and unlearn all the previous hair care practices that weren’t the most beneficial to you takes time. You have to trust the process, not rush the process.

In 2024, we’re not obsessing over the little things, including frizz, a curl out of place, or shed hair (especially if we’re coming out of alternative styles or haven’t shampooed in several weeks). Be comfortable with being a novice and not obsessing over the little things.
