4 Tips for Loving Your Natural Hair

As we’ve been in the natural hair space since 2015, oftentimes it’s not even lack of skills/technique that we see naturals struggle with the most. It’s actually mindset. What we think about our own hair and the voices that we allow to live rent free in our heads actually impact us so much more than a styling product or technique.

This Valentine’s Day, we want to encourage naturals everywhere to love on their curls a little extra harder. It is up to us to truly see ourselves for the beauties that we are and accept 100% of us. Trust us, your best curl life is waiting for you there.

This blog post will offer 4 tips for loving your natural curls.

#1: Get Comfortable With Learning Your Hair

We’re pretty sure most of us have fallen victim to lusting over the hair of our self-proclaimed “Internet hair twin” and have been inspired to run to our local Target aisle and grab every product she used for a style that resulted in a horrible finish for ourselves.

Don’t be shy in admitting it, we’ve all been there! 😉

Different Essential Elements are often why what works for another person doesn’t work for you. Each of us have a set of unique Essential Elements that will help us truly learn our hair.

The Essential Elements of Hair are generally accepted principles (GAP) in the study of hair as understood by cosmetologists, dermatologists and lay people alike. The 10 Essential Elements include texture, surface texture, density, porosity, elasticity, curl diameter, hydration level, climate, lifestyle and water quality.

When you are knowledgeable about your own head of hair and how it typically behaves, this will help make caring for your hair so much easier.

#2: Shut Out The Haters & Naysayers

As black women, we know that a huge part of how we wear our hair also involves the people closest to us, whether we want them to be involved or not. There’s always a set of wavering opinions that battle day in and out either at work, in our personal lives or a combination of both regarding our natural hair.

We’re sure we won’t be the first to tell you, but forget all the haters and naysayers! Seriously. How you wear your hair has nothing to do with your mama, boyfriend, husband, girlfriend, coworkers, bosses, etc. What they say or think about your hair only matters when you give the power you possess over your choices to them.

And to be honest, some days you will look in the mirror and genuinely may not like your hair because it won’t do the thing you want it to do. Seeing yourself in a way that you aren’t normally accomusted to can be jarring because you are not used to seeing yourself in that manner. But stick with it. You just might love the transformed person that emerges.

On those days where it’s just a bit too much try to rock whatever comes out of your bonnet with confidence anyway, try throwing on a headwrap or headband with some lipstick and earrings can instantly change the game.

#3: Seek Help If You’re Struggling With Your Hair

Contrary to popular belief, natural hair doesn’t have to be this at-home, DIY process to figuring out your curls. We have seen countless naturals that have been let down so many times within their hair journey, that they’ve often reached a point of severe burn out and disappointment.

This doesn’t have to be your fate with your natural hair journey and there are plenty of resources and licensed professionals out here to help you.

As licensed stylists and tight curl educators ourselves, we always strongly encouraged partnering with an educated pro near you. You can visit My Style-List—a location-based stylist directory created by our CEO/founder, Aishia, for help finding someone in your area.

#4: Join A Supportive & Encouraging Community

There’s nothing like being apart of a community space that knows exactly what you are in your journey and can relate to you and also offer geniune encouragement and support.

Our digital course community—The SeeSomeCurls Visual Library, offers just that. Beyond the course material, what we love to see the most is the fellowship and love amongst our community of naturals.
