3 Ways To Protect Your Natural Hair In The Winter

As you’re reading this blog post it is currently -5°F in Chicago, although with the wind chill, it feels more like -24°F. My doors on my car are frozen shut and I still managed to take my 9-year-old son to a birthday party.

No matter where you are in the world, there can come a point to where you’re trying to figure out how to manage your natural hair in brutal cold temperatures. This blog post will highlight 3 ways that you can protect your natural hair during the winter months.

#1: Cleanse Your Hair Regularly

Trust us, now is NOT the time to go longer than 14 days without cleansing your hair with the appropriate shampoo.

Pro Tip: We typically recommend that you cleanse and condition your hair every 7 to 10 days, with an average lifestyle. If you work out, are a heavy sweater or work a dirty job, this duration could be much sooner.

While it is a common belief that the cold hair is robbing their natural hair of moisture, the truth is that being indoors in our warm home that typically lack moisture, is the truth culprit behind dry hair and skin.

#2: Avoid Contact With Wool Hats & Scarves

Personally, I’m a hoodie kind of girl, however we highly recommend either used silk/satin lined hats or even wearing a bonnet or a buff to protect your natural hair from the bitter temperatures.

You can purchase satin lined hats from Grace Eleyae, KINApparel, The Wrap Life, and even Amazon—just to name a few.

Pro Tip: However you decide to bundle up, please keep in mind that the friction from wool accessories can cause breakage to our hair.

#3: Cocktail Your Conditioners

If you’re noticing that your hair styles aren’t lasting as long or it just seems a bit dry, now would be the time to pair your normal rinse out conditioner with a masque or deep conditioner treatment.

When we refer to “cocktailing” or “layering” your products, we typically mean apply your treatment to your first, then apply your rinse out conditioner on top.

If you’re unsure of which particular treatment your hair needs, we highly recommend consulting with your stylist, or asking in our online education community if you are a current SeeSomeCurls subscriber.

This time of the year also typically calls for a re-evaluation of your styling products. We definitely recommend using botanical gels with more water for your wash and go’s or paired a humectant-based leave-in conditioner with a foam for twist outs. This may also be the time to choose a cream with hold for your twist out or even layer your botanical gel with an anti-humectant topper. You can visit this blog post for more information on why we use botanical gels for tight curlies + naturals.
