We originally started the #30DayHairDetox in January 2016 after an article Aishia wrote called “10 Things Hair Stylists Want You to Stop Doing Right Now” went viral once submitted to Blackdoctor.org.

What started as consumers wanting to learn more about their natural hair quickly turned into consumers looking for stylists who could cut tight curls.

After receiving feedback from the natural hair community, we quickly learned that it was going to be much more difficult to recommend curl artists that were fully equipped to cut tight curls.

What Should I Do If There Isn’t a Curl Specialist In My Area?

This is a question we get asked often and we’re here to offer three tips for partnering with a stylist. Please note that these are merely suggestions and we highly recommend that you be clear and direct in what you’re looking for to get the hair results that you desire.

Tip #1: Travel Outside of Your Local Area to the Stylist of Your Choice

We recognize that having the means to travel outside of your local area is a privilege, however it’s not uncommon. We have hundreds of women that travel to the curl artist of their choice every few months depending on their hair length and other immediate curl needs. Even professional stylists have to travel to get their hair done!

To make the task less daunting, we also have many women that like to make it into a fun trip so it doesn’t seem like they’re solely traveling for hair. If you have the means to travel, we would highly recommend doing so to get the results that you desire. We also highly recommend pre-booking your next appointment at the end of your salon appointment so you’re already on that particular stylist’s books.

Use hashtags!

Instagram can be a very powerful tool in finding a suitable stylist to partner with. In case you didn’t know, you can find stylists by searching through hashtags

Tip #2: Do Your Own Research and Due Diligence on Instagram

Instagram can be a very powerful tool in finding a suitable stylist to partner with. In case you didn’t know, you can find stylists by searching through hashtags. For example, if you live in the Los Angeles area, we recommend that you try typing: #curlspecialistla, #curlartistla, #curlyhairla, etc into the search bar to locate stylists.

Take your time sifting through their pages and determining if you see cuts on their page that resonate with you and you could see yourself wearing yourself. Please try to use your best judgment in properly vetting out a new stylist before you book your first appointment with them.

Tip #3: Opt for a Haircut on Blown Out Hair

If you’ve exhausted all of your options and there’s nothing else that you can think of that works for you and your lifestyle, you can find a stylist to get a cut on blown out hair. We highly recommend arriving to the salon appointment with inspiration pictures of cuts that you like. Be very direct in what you want or do not want.

The Force MD Mullet

Short hair all over and then a long area at the nape of the neck that was left there from a straight hair cut or in an attempt to retain length against all odds.

Also, do not request layers be cut in your hair. Since natural hair is considered 3-Dimensional hair and doesn’t live down, you could find yourself leaving the appointment with a mullet. Instead, we suggest asking that your hair be cut in one length to avoid mullets and hair that doesn’t translate well overall in its curly state.
